In June, 1981, six teenagers in the village of Medjugorje, Yugoslavia, claimed to have had visions of the Virgin Mary, who they say has continued to appear to them over the ensuing years.
(A) claimed to have had visions of the Virgin Mary, who
(B) claimed to have visions of the Virgin Mary, whom
(C) claimed to have had visions of the Virgin Mary, whom
(D) claimed to have visions of the Virgin Mary, who
(E) had claimed to have had visions of the Virgin Mary, whom


I feel the OA is wrong, Pls share your reasonings.

what is the 'subject' of this sentence ? isn't it Six teenagers ? If that is the case then "who" after virgin mary should be an object pronoun - whom

in which case, in my opinion, option B should be correct.

the use of "had" is unnecessary - options A, C and E are out. Option D uses the subject pronoun "who" to refer to Mary.

can someone please chime in?

what is the OA?

OA is A, but I feel B is correct

It has to be "who" so B,C & E are out.

between A & D

"Have had" is proper... its not an extra had

the form is
Have/Has + Past Participle ( in this case "had" as the event occurred in 1981)

IMO A

I chose A & i think had is required here.

'claimed to have visions' alters the meaning.

I agree with aj5105.

The meaning is altered if you don't use had.
Who is the correct usage in this context.

i would go for option A

have had visisions is correct here, as the action started and completed in the past, virgin Mary has been appearing to them from then till today.

Why should who be used instead of whom? Isn't the subject the teenagers?

yes teenagers are the subject here. they had visions of Mary, Mary has been appearing to them and so we use who instead of whom.

when we can replace who/whom by her: we should use whom
when we can replace who/whom by she: we should use who

we could have said. "she has been appearing to them". so we used who.

I just found a great explanation on who vs. whom here: https://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/wh ... -whom.aspx

The site has a tip that says substitute in him/he into the sentence. If him fits, use whom. If he fits, use he.


I'm going to try this tip out on other problems.

I think ans should be E. COz first of all it has to be 'who' not 'whom' and have had is Past prefect tense means action has been completed while it has not been complete. SO, i feel they still have this vision thats why E is correct/

IMO A. Simple trick to identify Who/Whom is to pose a question ....... who(or whom) they say has continued to appear ......

If the answer is "she" then use "who" , If the answer is "Her" then use "whom".

I feel "She" sounds perfect in the above context , hence "Who "
