Another 700+ GMAT Aspirant - Need help

by JP » Tue Jun 19, 2007 1:40 pm
Hi,

I am another GMAT aspirant and I thank members of this website including Eric, who have posted lots of useful info. I am planning to take my exam on Sep 12. My background

IT professional, 32 years did my commerce degree 12 years ago. I took a princeton review course from Feb to April 15. It was a good introduction course. My test results were as follows
Princeton 1: 620 Q42, V33
Princeton 2: 580 Q42, V26
GMATPrep1: 660 Q42, V36
GMATPrep2: 580 Q42, V26

I was about to take exam on April end but after looking at my GMATPrep2 results, I decided against it. I really need to work a lot on verbal questions. Now, I have restarted my preparation on June 4th and I have ordered Manhattan SC book based on the recommendation from various people on this website.

I have reproduced my Quant Problem Solving Log at the end of the post. I need help to know how I can improve my timing to average less than 2 minute per question. Currently it averages between 2.5 minutes to 3 minutes. Also, how should I improve on the target areas i.e. if I know I was slow or had a concept error on a particular question, I dont seem to be confident enough that I have improved revisiting it? I do retry the questions that were wrong without reading the explanation but in cases where I do not have an approach, I end up going to explanations. Also, the problem is that as I understand a question and the approach to solve it, I do it faster when I re-do it. But I am not very sure if I retake a similar question with different values, I have improved my timing.

Another thing I noted was that I was rushing through reading the questiions. You really waste a lot of time solving the problem and not finding the answer that you got.

Thanks a lot for all your help,
JP

Abbrevation: CT-Category, TM-Time in minutes to solve 10 questions, SL-Slow, C-Correct, W-Wrong, CR-Careless Error, CN-Concept Error

I added '-' to indent the columns. It was a bit painful. Any other suggestion as to how to post this log is welcome!

From your post, it almost sounds like your problem is that you are not confident with your answers and that you may be second guessing yourself, which makes you take too much time per question--is this a correct assessment?

Otherwise, it takes a lot of practice to get your pacing down. I suggest doing your practice sets with a timer, and not allowing yourself more than two minutes for any given problem. You cannot allow yourself two minutes per question on the exam; you must learn to make an educated guess and move on, even if you think the answer is close to your finger tips.

The GMAT heavily penalizes you for questions you leave unanswered, so the best strategy is to finish the test! Best of luck.

Thanks for your thoughts Eric. Probably you are right to certain extent. If I finish some question very quickly, I do double check it at times to make sure I have not made any silly error. I would be more careful about that next time so that I do not waste time there. Similarly, I always go for solving PS completely. So, out of the 10 question block, majority I should be around the 2 minute mark but 2-3 of them, I may take 3-4 minutes or so. Generally I am more careful in practice test about this and guess and move on.
Should I adopt the same strategy while solving OG questions too?

Thanks again for your help Eric,
JP
