Of the attendees in a conference, 80% are Phds. If 75% of the Phds are of European origin, what % of non-Phds is of European origin?

1] The total number of Phds attending the conference is 4900.
2] 70% of all attendees are of European origin.
The GMAT is indeed adaptable. Whenever I answer RC, it proficiently 'adapts' itself to mark my 'right' answer 'wrong'.

The ans should be B.
(If I am not missing something)

S1) Insufficient. Not gives much of info.

S2) 70% are eurpoeans

Let total be X
total europeans=70X/100

80% of X = PHDs = 80X/100
out of them 75% are europeans.
European PHDs = (80X/100)*(75/100)

Total nonPHDs = 20% of X = 20X/100
let z% out of them be Europeans.
European non-PHDs = (20X/100)*(z/100)

70X/100 = (80X/100)*(75/100) + (20X/100)*(z/100)

we can solve for z

IMO B

Use double matrix to solve this

so by the diagram we get non phd euro as 10 %

Mental,
You are aboslutely right. It should be B)

Stmt I doesnt add any relevenat info to find the %. We can take the total as 100 since it involves percenatages to find whats asked in the question

INSUFF

Stmt II

80 out of 100 are phd's 20 NON PHD'S

Out of that 60 are of european origin and 20 of non european origin.

Stmt II says 70 % of all attendants are from europe. So since we have 60 of europe phd's(60% to 100) 10 % are europeans who are non phd's

10%

SUFF

Choose B)
