Because Halley’s comet changes orbit slightly during the seventy-six-year interval between passing close to Earth, it may veer onto a collision course with a planet sometime in the distant future.

(A) between passing
(B) of passing
(C) between its passes
(D) of its passes
(E) as it passes

I think the answer should be (C) because the interval should be in between something.

Because Halley's comet changes orbit.... <options> close to Earth,
Because Halley's comet changes orbit option C/option E close to Earth,
Because Halley's comet changes orbit as it passes close to Earth,

I find E a better pick as compared to C. Can anyone explain the other way
This time no looking back!!!
