A,B,D is wrong because it changes the meaning...it means that the archaeologists discovered 5000 yrs ago.
E is unidiomatic because that is placed far from discovered.

Choice C is logically correct. It is the Archaeologist that discovered something about Mesopotamian cooking that occurred 5000 years ago

As GMAT destroyer points out, only C is logical and correct because the other answer choices make it seem as though archeologists were around 5000 years ago.
