I'm not sure what you meant by a specific rule or example.. but as far as i understand,

like those of most religions , Sikhism has codified its teachings... -- INCORRECT
like those of most religions , teachings of Sikhism has codified... -- CORRECT

Sikhism is singular and "those" is a pronoun referring to a plural noun. So, Those must properly refer to "teachings".

I'm not sure whether i answered your query.

the book says a pronoun like those must follow an already expressed noun
what does this mean
if i interpret it correctly then as per this statement your version of like those of most religions , teachings of Sikhism has codified... -- CORRECT
is wrong as here those does not follow teachings

when you have this sort of initial modifier, it can include a pronoun that refers to an IMMEDIATELY following noun (i.e., a noun that follows very closely behind the comma).

example:

like his father, Seth's mother is extremely intelligent.
--> this is ok.
like Seth's father, his mother is extremely intelligent.
--> this is incorrect; we don't know whose mother (i.e., Seth's mother or Seth's father's mother -- the sentence could potentially refer to either.)
