According to one expert, the cause of genetic irregularities in many breeds of dog is not so much that dogs are being bred for looks or to meet other narrow criteria as that the breeds have relatively few founding members.

A.
B. the cause of genetic irregularities in many breeds of dog is not as much their being bred for looks or meeting other narrow criteria as much
C. it is not so much the cause of genetic irregularities in many breeds of dog that they are being bred for looks or meeting other narrow criteria as much
D. it is not so much the cause of genetic irregularities in many breeds of dog is their being bred for looks or meeting other narrow criteria so much

well I got kinda lost cuz the meaning seemed complex to me, so I went with B just to move on even though I was not convinced. Could you please let me know whether "such much X as Y" is a GMAT idiom? never heard of that..or I still get the meaning wrong. Thank you in advance.

i would just go for a. it is a very complex statement whose meaning is not tht clear. but all other choices have some prblm...maybe a is okay as it is. wats the answer?

I think the answer is A.

There's an idiom.
"not so much A as B"
According to one expert, the cause of genetic irregularities in many breeds of dog is not so much that dogs are being bred for looks or to meet other narrow criteria as that the breeds have relatively few founding members.

Guys I chose B because of the idiom as much as...please tell me why that is wrong..

problem with B i think is in the use of pronoun their

in B the noun is changed from DOGS to breeds of dog....their(wrong pronoun)

MY 2 cents...

In A there is parallelism which is very imp while using idioms...

the cause of genetic irregularities in many breeds of dog is not so much that dogs are being bred for looks or to meet other narrow criteria as that the breeds have relatively few founding members.
