We are given that x is positive.
i.e. x >0

From Statement 1: if x = 3, (x-1)^2 = 4, thus x > 3. SUFFICIENT
From Statement 2: if x = 5, (x-2)^2 = 9, thus x > 5. SUFFICIENT

Thus answer is D.

Consider first (1) alone.
It says (x-1)^2 > 4.
So either (x-1) > 2 or (x-1) < -2.
So either x > 3 or x < -1.
But since it is given that x is positive, x > 3.
Or (1) alone is sufficient to answer the question.
Next consider (2) alone.
It means (x-2)^2 > 9.
So either (x-2) > 3 or (x-2) < -3.
Or either x > 5 or x < -1.
But since it is given that x is positive, x > 5.
Since x > 5, x > 3 also.
So (2) alone is sufficient to answer the question.

The correct answer is (D).
