Very simple ratio question

by torofish » Wed Dec 09, 2009 1:18 am
there are 2 equations: ratios of students in each major

English Student = 2 History Student
English Student = 3 Math Student

The question is what is the ratio of History to Math Student

It's Math/History, which is 3/2, right?

the ratio of X to Y is answered in the form of Y/X, right?

Its pretty simple:

English Student = 2 History Student
English Student = 3 Math Student

--> 2 History Student = 3 Math Student

--> Ratio is 2:3

Let History Students be 'H'
Math Student 'M'
English 'E'

We have,
E = 2H
So, H=(1/2)E

Similarly.
E = 3M
So, M = (1/3)E

Ratio of History Students to Math Students is,
H:M = H/M = (1/2E)/(1/3E)
= 3/2 = 3:2
