Hi all,

I aim to beat GMAT in early August. So far, i completed PR & Kaplan. I've no issues with Math, with some practice i can ace it. Trouble comes with Verbal.

I'm comfortable solving CR & RC eventhough they take long time. I take so long because; Firstly, my english reading speed is around 130 words per minute. Secondly, i'm so used to reading sentences mulitple times in order to comprehend clearly.

Can anyone guide me, who had this problem and how did they overcome?
How did you improve on reading speed and comprehension?
Any suggestions are welcome :)

Next comes the monster, SC. I went thru MR SC guide twice and got familiar with rules. Prepared flashcards etc.,. But, when i attempt to solve OG questions and look at the OG explanations, i get scared because my analysis is no where near OG's analysis. Is it normal? How to think like GMAC thinks?

Any good step by step strategy on how to start analysing the SC question?
How to analyse? what to consider and what to ingnore when reading the question?

May be more practice and exposure solve this problem but i'm too anxious as time is a constraint. Who wants to work hard if there is smart way?

I believe any reply to this post will help a lot of non-native english speakers.

Observation : It is interesting that as i type for this post i'm conciously thinking about grammatical correctness. Side effects of GMAT

Cheers

hi verbalattack ( choice of ur name tells the whole story)

i am also planning to give GMAT in aug mid. Ur story is very similar to mine.

maths is cool for me too, but verbal specially SC is what makes me sweat. Buddy ... solution is only one... SMARTWORK... and not just hard work.

initially take ur time to anlyse the solution given in the OG and not just make rules from it. remember it is not maths it is english. u make one rule... and u'll find ten exceptions to it.

so get into the explanation carefully and understand it. then u must disscuss ur ideas or ur approch and answers with others. u can utilize this site for it. or if u have a study group , nothing like it. disscussion is must. several people post questions here... u also give ur answer to it and read what others have given and y....

another but very indirect way to read a lot. newspapers, magazines, books etc... this will help u to solve ur reading speed problem also and ur eyes and mind will get used to correct english sentences also.

all the best....

VerbalAttttacker,

I'm squashed on the SC front too. I went through the whole of Manhattan SC guide but am yet to understand the strategy to attack any SC question. All the errors (VPIMPS) come to my head once I see a question... :?

Any advice??
