What would you do in this tricky situation?

Now here is the scenario:

John is desperate to go to a top Business school. Lets assume that he has all the right reasons for getting an MBA. He is targeting 6 Business schools. 2 of them are the most wanted schools with average GMAT score of 700. The rest of the 4 are very good schools which are on an upward growth trend and are slowly becoming very competitive.

He took his GMAT and score a 640 (Q44 V34), and then heart broken put in all his effort and retook it after a month and unfortunately scored a 620!! Now should he retake the test again??

Here is the "catch":

1. He reported his first score to his 3 top choice schools.
2. The second time he reported his scores to the other 3 schools.
3. Now if he retakes and his score goes down further, it would show a clear downward trend.
4. If he doesn't retake he might risk his possibility of getting into his top choice schools.

Lets help John here. Please vote on what you would do?

Just retake it. Clearly no one can tell you what to do, but if you want to go to a top 6 school, then there is no shame in taking it again to get the score you need. If you do decide to take it again, just make sure you study differently and don't schedule the test until you are consistently hitting above your target on your practice exams. I would say don't pay for a class if you have already taken one. I think the mistake too many people make is that they take a class and then use the class as the end all of their test prep. If you studied 3 hours a day when you got the 640/620 then up it to 4 or 5. If you studied 4-5 days a week, up it to 7. You need to make sure you do things differently.

Gmat I hear is only a part of the picture. Does "John" have a good GPA? Does his work reflect MBA potential? Its all a very subjective process, I wouldn't retake it based on how my other 70-80% of the application stands. If you..ehm i mean "John" :D has a good track record with the essays, gpa, and work experience, then even with a 640, he stands a good chance.

If you feel you have it in you to score more than 640 you should definitely retake it.
