We are looking to weaken the argument.

(A), (B), and (E) are out of scope (too broad).

(C) does not weaken the argument. The fact that the process can be patented has no impact on the cost of the drugs (based on the passage).

(D) is the right answer. Logically thinking through (D), research costs money, patents are part of the reason why pharmaceutical companies have money, without the money there is no development of drugs, no development of drugs means there are no new drugs.

banker1 is correct.

as per the CR Bible, in weakening questions the first step should be to locate the conclusion of the stimulus, and then see which answer choice weakens the conclusion best.

also, information taken from outside the stimulus is allowed in strengthen/weaken questions only.
