Misplaced modifier

by vikram4689 » Thu Jun 30, 2011 2:08 am
Except for one class in history and one in biology, all the student's graduation requirements have been fulfilled.
(A) Except for one class in history and one in biology, all the student's graduation requirements have been fulfilled.
(B) Except for needing to take one class in history and one in biology, the student has fulfilled all of his requirements for graduation.
(C) The student has fulfilled all his graduation requirements except for one class in history and one in biology.
(D) Except for one history class and one biology class, the student has fulfilled all of his graduation requirements.
(E) Aside from the history class and biology class that he needs to take, the student's graduation requirements have all been fulfilled.
Isnt the option D has misplaced modifier, the modifier should modify requirements and not student; i.e.
Except for one history class and one biology class, all the graduation requirements have been fulfilled by the student.
Thanks for link, read the whole discussion twice. so i does it mean it in each of the following sentence the action of fulfilling the requirement is being modifier by the adverbial phrase modifier -"Except for one history class and one biology class"
a)Except for one history class and one biology class, the student has fulfilled all of his graduation requirements.
b)Except for one history class and one biology class, all the graduation requirements have been fulfilled by the student.

There is nothing WRONG with C. 'one class in history' is WORDIER than 'one history class' and 'one history class' clarifies the meaning a bit more clearly.
