Is a 590 Possible?

by moatik » Sat Mar 26, 2011 11:57 am
I am aiming to achieve a GMAT score between 570-610.

So far I have been doing problems from OG12 for about two weeks now, as well as looking over some blogs and tips. I plan on taking my gmat examination in two or three weeks to make sure I am within a deadline. However because of my crazy work schedule, I can only dedicate around 2-3 hours during the week and a couple more on the weekend. Any chances of me getting that score, what tips or guides can I use to help me?

I have taken two practice exams so far;

1st) Forgot the name I got 390: Q22 V21 (This was the first one I took about a week ago, was kind of distracted during)
2nd) OG GMAT prep software I got 490: Q32 V25 (I took this one today)

Any Advise on areas of improvement / overall strategy?

What are the chances of a 100 point improvement over the next two weeks given my schedule?

Everything is possible given reasonable conditions. So it hard to say exactly if you can make a 100p improvement in X amount of days. But https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2010/01/ ... study-plan
is a study guide to at least read through.

If you are so short of time it is very important to practice those areas where you use to do (careless) mistakes or get wrong. E.g. if you are shaky on primes, then practice primes. Or if you are careless when reading what the problem ask for e.g. 2X instead of X, then focus on the question little more.

People on this forum do all kind of magic from what you can read. Unfortunately I am not one of them. I need time to understand and prepare for a test like GMAT. I mean I will not score 700 with 2week prep or anything like that. Another thing I notice is you seem to be extremely pressed with your current work schedule. If you really want to do your best maybe you should try to take a few days off each week to focus, practice, and review.

Another IRONMAN approach which also can be read about here is to get up early. E.g. if your work starts at 8. Get up at 05:00 and practice a while before work. I believe that since you are short in time before test you will have to work harder and sleep less.

Be positive, focus and do all your best. Good luck!

Thank you for the detailed post. I think one of my deficiency is in the verbal section, do you happen to know of any online resource to help with that? I was trying to look at the score grid, looks like if I improve my Q score by 5 and V by another 5 I should be able to attain the target score I need. Any thoughts?
