Subordinate Clause Parallelism

by nycknicks11 » Mon May 09, 2011 9:38 pm
I have a 2 questions regarding this "odd" looking SC.

1)Does this not look weird with "Children who watch a great deal of television whose families..."

2) Let's say you have "AND" between television and whose, would it be parallel?
"who..." subordinate clause and "whose" subordinate clause.

Hey, This is a good question, before reading your question i started solving this question and yes i find the exactly same issues...

I don't think Op B is correct, but i do believe if we place AND after television, then both these relative clause WHO / WHOSE clauses will be parallel and modify children. You must be knowing already a clause can be parallel to a clause. Although m a bit doubtful because generally we place a relative noun as close to the noun it is modifying and here WHOSE gonna be very far (after placing AND) but that where i guess the parallelism will work.

Interesting question...whats the source..kaplan???

1. Here the intention of the sentence is to compares childred of families who are disposed to some sort of eye sightedness. Thus, children are identified by the characteristics of their family. So, children in the first sentence should be somehow attached to a family which cannot be done using AND. Possessive pronoun 'whose' properly refers to families which belong to children.

2. Usage of AND as per your question should join two ICs. The second sentence after AND, whose .. doesnot have a subject. So, from this perspective usage of AND sounds awkward here. However, if a option describes the second part of sentence, which is underlined, and makes it to be an IC, it doesnot go with the meaning of the sentence as described in point 1.

Hope it helps. :)

Initially the sentence is actually describing the children using WHO / WHOSE...so saying this that possessive pronoun WHOSE is referring to families i believe is incorrect here...

Second, AND will not always connect 2 independent clauses in fact, but a COMMA + AND connects two IC's or used in List of items, so i believe there is no such issue related to the use of AND after television.

In short, the relative clauses of WHO / WHOSE are describing children and the structure should be..

Children who bla bla bla and Whose parents bla bla bla will require glasses sooner than THEIR......

So u see the comparison is made between children only

'and' is wrongly underlined

Rewriting what was said in options..
A) childern loose vision if they see their families... [ Wrong ]
B) Childern (whose family members have vision problems in their gene) will have glasses very soon.
First take: 640 (50M, 27V) - RC needs 300% improvement
Second take: coming soon..
