GMAT Score:730
Hello world! I took my GMAT a week back (my 2nd attempt) and I scored 730. I must be quite happy because it's a decent score right?! NO! Sadly, I'm an IT male from India. I couldn't apply this year because most deadlines are over and I don't want to apply in haste. I have to start applying to universities next August. Now, because of my limitations (India IT male), I'm scared. My overall profile isn't that great too. This is where I seek your help.

I want to know if there is ANYTHING I can do to strengthen my profile. And, in which of the top US B-schools do I have a realistic chance of getting in? I have lots of questions popping up in my head... (Will learning a foreign language help? Will certifications help? Do I have to improve my GMAT score? Can I switch to another job to align myself towards my MBA goals?)

Even small tips from your side could be life-saving at this moment. Thanks.

That's pretty much it. Please help me take a practical view and know where I actually stand. Thanks again!

Congratulations on a great GMAT score. Getting into a job-profile which is aligned with your goals is the best thing you can do right now. Everything else NGO work, extra curricular etc. will turn out be a weak point unless consistently indulged into.

I don't agree that you can't apply this year, there are B-schools you can apply to as R2 deadlines of a few US B-schools is still not passed. But the most important question here is, where do you wish to be in your career 5 or 10 years down the line? What have you done so far in that direction? How much interest do you have in your future career? Have you done any ground work in understanding your future career? If yes then it would bring a lot of credibility to your candidature. Now, consider this example - "I am a lawyer by profession and over a period of time I got interested in advertising. I attended a seminar on advertising and wanted to try my hands on it. I have shot 4 short videos and published it on social media. I see a huge potential in social media advertising as FMCG firms can get useful insights about their products and services..... ".

Prompt reply! It is not that I don't want to apply this year, but I realize that I need more time to introspect.

The lawyer example gave a good understanding of how I must think henceforth. I get the picture. I need to take solid steps towards my future goals. Graphic designing is my passion and I have always dreamt of being an entrepreneur one day... I'll start thinking on these lines. Thank you : )

Hi Ramarvi,

Firstly, many congratulations for your scores.Just for your information, the weitghage given to GMAT in US B-School is in not more than 20%.So,no need to re-take your GMAT.Essays & interviews covers most part in any b-school application(say 60%-65%).So,I would strongly suggest that rather than preparing & re-taking your GMAT(which is currently pretty decent),you should focus on your essays & interviews.

Also suggest that equal weightage is given to all the rounds,as the b-schools look for diversity in the class. So,you can target R-2(2013 intake) and start working on your application essays. Some good b-schools with high marketing placement rate are:Kellogg,Ross,Cornell,Tepper,Haas,McCombs,Kelley & Emory.

Feel free to post any other query or concern that you might have.

Cheers!!
Yash
