Social Fingerprint & Admissions

by mans.sultan » Fri Oct 21, 2011 3:55 pm
I just learned that MBA programs check applicants' social fingerprint and do a thorough Google search with his/her name and may check his facebook pictures, tweets and linkedin profile. Well, this is semi-bad news for me...there's a killer here in my country whose fame name is called after me (couldn't you sir pick someone else?). It was a big accident here based on a religious clash, so it has been covered immensely worldwide. Whenever you search my full name, these news/blog posts come up along with my twitter/fb/linkedin/articles..etc. Will this affect my candidacy? The only good news is that my stuff is grouped together in the 1st-6th results then this news is all over the place. How can I mitigate this damage? and to what degree is it vital to my candidacy?

Thanks ahead for your help

Its true

"We don't systematically Google applicants or look up people on Facebook," says Lisa Beisser, senior associate director of MBA admissions at North Carolina's Kenan-Flagler Business School. "But if something strange comes up in an applicant's essay, we will check a Facebook page."

Stanford's Graduate School of Business also lacks a "specific policy or procedure to systematically review the social media sites of each applicant," according to a spokesperson. But "if something like this were brought to an admissions officer's attention, it would be dealt with on a case-by-case basis just as all the information we have on any given candidate is," the Stanford official says.

According to a survey by education company Kaplan, a unit of Washington Post Co., 38% of colleges that investigate social networking profiles have seen something that has "negatively affected" their view of an applicant. Only a quarter of the schools checking online presence said their views were improved by what the found, according to the survey.

However I have a very interesting theory. Clean yourself if you are going to church, anyways you are going there for the cleaning. Create a positive footprint for yourself on web. A award pic will not let you in but dont let them be confused and give them a chance to reject you.

We at throughMBA do a comprehensive social media audit. Deep web footprint building.

Thanks Alex for your reply...appreciate it. I take it then that it will negatively affect my chances? Because I have a feeling it played a role in a previous application...

I don't really think you need to worry about this. There are always plenty of people who share your name, so they won't think that everyone who is not you is you.

But on your own facebook page, you may want to delete those "Silly Costume" pictures from your best friend's last birthday party.

I agree. Almost definitely the admissions committee would figure out the difference and if not, give you an opportunity to prove you are not that person.
