GMAT Score:800

Logicician, for some nice quant questions in GMAT format, you could use the Veritas Question bank. I got some good practice there. I really like doing the questions online and the way the wrong and right answers show up red and green. It becomes like playing a video game.

To get some more ideas on how to increase your score, you could check out this post I wrote.

For some good practice CATs, find and download PowerPrep, an older software made by GMAC.

Play the test as if were a video game. Seek to score higher and higher.

I took the attitude that the the more I play, the better I get. If I am having trouble with a certain type of question, I play many of those until that type is like my favorite. Then I find another type I am worried about and go at it like a dog with a bone, considering every angle, looking up nuances online, doing question after question until I am confident.

Me personally, I don't really notice getting fatigued preparing. Even when I am shot, I do more questions. Sure I need rest sometimes, my head feels funny even. Still, my attitude is if this were a job I would just do it eight hours a day and get ridiculously good at it, just as one does with any job.

Part of the beauty of it is that in getting better at the GMAT I seem to have improved some key skills that I am using in many areas of life. So there is that too.

Rock this test. You have five weeks. That's an eternity in a way.

You have developed some familiarity with the test and question types. Your mind has had time to build a foundation.

Now get to be an expert, a player, a gamer.

Thanks Marty Murray for your advice. I particularly like the idea of treating the test like a game. Needless to say I'll be incorporating some of your ideas into prep. Also appreciate the morale boost.

Took a full practice MGMAT CAT with AWA this weekend. 540 Q39 V27. While my Quant went up 3 points my Verbal dropped 6 points. I'm happy to see the improvement in Quant even if its 3 points. I don't know what happened on Verbal because I definitely felt more confident and comfortable going through the Verbal section on this test. One thing I noticed on this CAT was that I had a huge timing issue, I ended up guessing on about last 7 to 8 questions on each section and the last question on verbal got left blank because I ran out of time. I didn't have this problem on my last CAT as I finished my Quant in 72 minutes and Verbal in 69 minutes on that one.

I'm not going to let this score disappoint me and am continuing with my planned study. I have planned to start EMPOWERgmat this coming week and have another practice CAT scheduled next weekend. I'm hoping I'll see improvement, maybe something in the 600s especially because my last CAT (GMATprep CAT) was 570 Q36 V33 with no essay though, which means I should be close.

In the mean time please keep the suggestions coming. You guys have been really helpful. I'll be posting regularly about my progress on here and hopefully one day this thread will become a source of inspiration for others in terms of what can be achieved if one puts their mind to it. But I will need advice from those of you who have made it past 700 to get there. So keep it coming guys and I will do my best to follow it.

Thanks!

P.S. Can someone tell me if I should keep posting here or start a new thread every time I take a new practice CAT or have a question. I have very little experience with forums but it seems like posting a new thread increases visibility by placing it on front page of forums and thus will lead to more members chiming in with their advice. I'd rather keep posting here so future members can see actual progression of someone.

Hi Logician,

GMAC has stated that your Official GMAT score is within +-30 points of actual ability, so it stands to reason that the two scores you mentioned (540 and 570) can be interpreted as the same score. The pacing problem you described could very easily swing your scores, depending on whether you got questions correct or incorrect at the end of the section. You MUST answer all the questions on Test Day though - leaving a question unanswered means that the question is marked as incorrect AND it is penalized. It's better to guess blindly than to leave a question unanswered.

With any CAT, you should plan on doing a question-by-question review. Try to categorize WHY you get questions wrong and focus on fixing the questions that you got wrong because of a silly/little mistake.

As far as how you might post about your progress, I think that it makes a certain amount of sense to keep your posts in this thread. Individual posts about Quant or Verbal questions should have their own threads, but your history and "narrative" will be easier to follow if everything is in one place.

Hi Logician,

If you are really looking to score 700+ then you need to give sufficient quality time to prepare well for GMAT.

However, we say above not with the intention of discouraging you. If you are really confident and have a strong belief in yourself, here's something you can try in the next coming months which should help you improve on your score:

Give as many mock tests as possible in next one month. However, more than giving the mock test, it is critical that you spend enough time in analysing your performance in the mock tests.

Typically if you spend 2 hours on mock test, spend 5-6 hours in analysing your performance in the same. Go through each and every question and look at them for as long as you want. You need to figure out a better, smarter and a faster way of doing the same question.

Take a note of all the points and then make sure you apply them in the next test. Keep doing this consistently and you will see your score going up.

In case, there are any specific queries, please do let us know and we would be happy to guide you.

Wish you the best for your gmat preparation.
