5 Months Studying, Still Low Score

I have spent the last 5 months studying 7 days a week about 10 hours a week. I still encounter prob solving and still do now know how to set up an equation. Taking a practice test turns into a guessing game. What do I do? How do people get 720 in under 2 months?

Hi ChicagotoPhoenix,

I'd like to know a bit more about how you've been studying and your goals:

1) What materials have you used during your studies?
2) Did you study 5 months straight or have your studies been inconsistent?
3) How have you scored on each of your CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?

4) Is your goal score 720?
5) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
6) When are you planning to apply to Business School?

Hi Rich,

I have been using the Manhattan books. An hour a day during lunch and 4 hours on the weekend. What has taken so much time is that I did all the math basics problems in the Manhattan books. Then I started moving to practice problems in the GMAc book.

I have only taken one practice test so far and it was low, 450. I am at a crossroad and am not sure whether to keep doing practice problems or move back to math basics problems.

Also have a real confidence issue with this. I will look at problems aND now know step one to set it up. I understand this test is not about crunching numbers but I can't seem to get even a small percentage of the problem right to arrive at the correct answer.

I have not yet set a date for the test. I don't feel prepared enough.

Yes, 700 to 720 would be ideal because of my GPA.

Hi ChicagotoPhoenix,

If it's been more than a couple of weeks since you took that CAT, then you should plan to take another FULL-LENGTH CAT (with the Essay and IR sections) sometime soon. That score result will help to define how well your studies have been progressing and what you still need to work on. Once you have that score result, you should post back here and we can talk about how best to proceed.
