Strategies for Seniors

by juyau800 » Wed Feb 17, 2010 10:42 pm
I am a college senior who got an interview invitation from HBS (R2).
and I have several questions about it.

1) How many seniors do they interview every year?
2) What's the best answer to "why apply now"?
I actually plan to defer for 2 years after gaining some work exp.,
the reason I am applying now is just that I want to have a better 5-year plan and get everything on track asap.
I believe it's more important for b schools to select applicants based on personality, rather than work experience.
That's why I applied as a senior.

Now I got an interview, is there a good strategy to convince the admon that I should get admitted this year?

Not sure how many they interview, but it's very few. They are actually notorious for taking in a few freshly minted undergrads who have exhibited an extrordinary amount of leadership. This is what you want to emphasize. As for why now, your answer should be grounded in a very clear vision for your future. In addition to contributing in the classroom, the reason folks wait to get work experience, is because they usually have not figured out exactly what it is they want to do. If you can convince the committee you have a very mature inkling about how you will make an impact in your career, you will go a long way in convincing them that it's a good time for them to "snap you up."

Congratulations, by the way on your invitation to interview--it is indeed an impressive accomplishment as a college senior.
