There are fewer than 1000 species if frog left in the amazon river basin.

The number of species of frog left in the river basin is less than 1000.

Question - As per princeton, both these sentences are correct. Why can't we use less in the first sentence and fewer in the second.

fewer: countable and less: non countable

fewer than 1000 species: one can count the species 10/500 ... or so many species. so fewer

number of species of frog left in the river basin is less than 1000: number is a singular concept. so less. (like 5 is less than 10 etc)
