when vs. if

by Fractal » Sun Aug 28, 2011 3:14 am
"when" can be used to modify a noun event or time, such as period, age, 1987 or decade.

What about the following sentence:

When my car is broken, I walk to the store.

Is this sentence regarded as an "event" and hence the usage of "when" correct?

Can somebody clarify with some examples when the usage of "when" is correct/incorrect?

thx a lot

As far as I know :

If is related to a condition and when is related to a time.

Moreover :

When referring to the future when shows certainty that something will happen. If is used when a person is unsure whether it will happen or not.

Both if and when can be used to talk about repeated situations and actions.

If you heat ice it melts. OR When you heat ice it melts.

I am sure others will post some valuable information...
