According to a survey conducted at the local law school, students like either cappuccino or tea but not both. Male students who like cappuccino form 30% of all students. Female students whol like tea are 25% of all students. Given that the ratio of male students to female students is 3:2. What percent of the female students like cappuccino?


Problem is pretty straight forward when solving algebraically. However, the algebraic approach is time is kinda time consuming. Looking for a quicker way around this one. Alternate solutions preferred. Thanks.

Let total = 100

Male : Female = 3: 2 = 60:40

Male - cappuccino = 30 - therefore Male - tea = 30 (total = 60)
Female - tea = 25 - therefore female - cappuccino = 15 (total = 40)

% Female(cappuccino ) = 15/40 * 100 = 37.5

Draw a table.

Say that there are a 100 students in the school. You know that 30 male students like cappuccinno and 25 female students like tea. You also know the ratio of male:female is 3:2 so there are 60 males and 40 females if there are 100 students. Now you can draw a table and fill in the missing information. The bold numbers are the information we have.

Like cappuccino Like tea Total

Male 30 30 60
Female 15 25 40
Total 45 55 100

Excuse the messy table but you get the idea.

Let the total = 100.
Since M:F = 3:2 = 60:40, F=40.
Of these 40 females, 25 like tea, so the number who like cappuccino = 40-25 = 15.
(Females who like cappuccino)/(Total females) = 15/40 = 7.5/20 = 37.5/100 = 37.5%.
