(1) The call cost more for the first minute that than for each additional minute.
(2) The call costs $5.68

The OA is E.

I'm really confused by this PS question. Can anyone explain it, please? I don't understand why E is the correct answer. Thanks in advance.

We have to find out how long did the collect call last.

Let's take each statement one by one.

(1) The call cost more for the first minute that than for each additional minute.

No information about time. Insufficient.

(2) The call costs $5.68.

No information about time. Insufficient.

(1) and (2) together

Say the call charge for the first minute = $x and that for subsequent minutes = $y per minute, where x > y. Say Tom called for t minutes, thus,

5.68 = x + (t - 1)y

Can't get the value of t. Insufficient.

The correct answer: E

This does tell us how long the call is. Statement one alone is not sufficient.

Statement Two Alone:

The call costs $5.68.

This does tell us how long the call is either. Statement two alone is not sufficient.

Statements One and Two Together:

With both statements, we still can't determine how long the call is. For example, if the first minute costs $1.68 and each additional minute costs $1.00, then the call would last 5 minutes. However, if the first minute costs $1.68 and each additional minute costs $0.50, then the call would last 9 minutes. Both statements together are still not sufficient.

Answer: E
