I would go with E since we are referring to human brain here which is a single entity. We need a pronoun that can refer to the subject which is human brain.B and C do not have the relevant antecedent referring to the subject.Hence they are ruled out we need something that refers to the human brain for which we consider options D and E.D seems to sound awkward since the noun experiences is not supported by a relevant verb.E explains this part clearly and supports the noun experiences too with retains.

A.) also and as well are redundant. this alone cannot refer to a noun or the fact here.

It would have been better to say "this fact is true of good situations as wel".

B and C - incomplete sentences.

D.) "it" cannot refer to the psychologists knowing.
E.) CORRECT - "it" refers to human brain and frames a proper clause after "but".
