Lightbox, Inc.

by amitabhprasad » Tue Jan 20, 2009 5:22 pm
Lightbox, Inc., owns almost all of the movie theaters in Washington County and has announced plans to double the number of movie screens it has in the county within five years. Yet attendance at Lightbox’s theaters is only just large enough for profitability now and the county’s population is not expected to increase over the next ten years. Clearly, therefore, if there is indeed no increase in population, Lightbox’s new screens are unlikely to prove profitable.

Which of the following, if true about Washington County, most seriously weakens the argument?

A. Though little change in the size of the population is expected, a pronounced shift toward a younger, more affluent, and more entertainment-oriented population is expected to occur.
B. The sales of snacks and drinks in its movie theaters account for more of Lightbox’s profits than ticket sales do.
C. In selecting the mix of movies shown at its theaters, Lightbox’s policy is to avoid those that appeal to only a small segment of the moviegoing population.
D. Spending on video purchases, as well as spending on video rentals, is currently no longer increasing.
E. There are no population centers in the county that are not already served by at least one of the movie theaters that Lightbox owns and operates.

OA is A but I think it should be C

I too chose C as I thought with the increase in screens, different category of movies can be played and hence people with different age group would come to theater.

I think OA is correct.

The main part in the argument is the "increase in population". A shows us that "increase in population" is not everything there is, hence weakens the argument in it's own way.

C probably weakens the argument, but not in it's own words, and certainly not the most.

A just rocks here.

A is correct answer. It says though there is no substantial increase in population the shift in the moviegoing crowd is going to make it profitable.

C doesn't talk any thing about the population.

A is more relavent in this case

Yeah this is from one of the PBTs. I think the OA is correct ..

To weaken the argument - it needs to be proven that the profits will increase/remain the same despite the stagnant population growth.

Option A explains how that can be accomplished.

The answer should be A beacuse it states that even if the population is not increasing but a greater segment of the samw population will be going to theatres so this gives thte reason to increase the numbe rof theatres.

C cannot be an answer beacuse the policy has not been changed to increase the occupancy of theatre. same pollicy might be there before the expansion plan also.

Option A uses a broad term Entertainment and mentions nothing about theaters. How do we assume that Entertainment crowd is a Theater going oriented crowd??

Any thoughts on this...

I would go with option C as the correct option
