during a drought the amount of water in a pond was reduced by one third . if the amount of water in the pond was 48000 gallons immediately after the drought how many thousands of gallons of water were lost during the drought.

A. 16
B. 24
C. 36
D. 64
E 72

After the drought amount of water becomes 2/3 of the initial amount
after drought amount of water is 48 thousand gallons
hence 48x3/2-48 or 48/2or 24 thousands of gallons of water were lost during the drought

water rem in pond is 2/3=48000
so 1/3=x
solving x=(48000*3) /2*3=24000

Some good solutions, here's another way to look at it:

we know that 48000 is 2/3 the total.

We want 1/3 the total.

Well, 2/3 is twice as much as 1/3.

So, to get 1/3, we take one half of 48000, which equals 24000... Choose (B).
