by Sunshine85 » Sat Jul 04, 2009 6:22 am
Climatic shifts are so gradual as to be indistinguishable at first from ordinary fluctuations in the weather.

(A) so gradual as to be indistinguishable
(B) so gradual they can be indistinguishable
(C) so gradual that they are unable to be distinguished
(D) gradual enough not to be distinguishable
(E) gradual enough so that one cannot distinguish them

Answer is A

I think the Answer is C

Please explain

so X as to be Y and so that are both correct idioms..

but in this question, if you look at answer C,

so gradual that they ...... they refers to who ? it cannot be climate shifts.

So I think A is correct..

as far as E is concerned, I think it is wordy...

Please correct me if I am wrong...

Could someone tell me why is D wrong?
Peace

Idiom

so...as is a idiom..

Also.. i think They is a misused pronoun.. They is WHO???? Climate shift..;-)

Hence: B & C -->Out

D: is wrong because: of replacing the correct word in original sentence with a wordy alternative.

I don't think: indistinguishable = not to be distinguished. (in meaning)

indistinguishable: Means exactly alike...incapable of being percieved as different

PS: Correct me if i am wrong..

"they" can refer to the people who are not able to distinguish the change.

I answered a question yesterday which goes like this.

The patient's rare disease was treated using novel techniques developed at the medical school. (WRONG)

The doctor treated the patient's rare disease by using novel techniques developed at the medical school. (Correct)
