To reach her destination, Jeanette must drive 90 miles. If she drives 5 miles every 7 minutes, how much time will it take her to reach her destination?

A. 2 hours and 2 minutes
B. 2 hours and 6 minutes
C. 2 hours and 10 minutes
D. 2 hours and 12 minutes
E. 2 hours and 15 minutes

The OA is B.

5 miles in 7 minutes, that's mean 7/5 minutes per mile, and the total distance is 90 miles, then

90*(7/5) = 630/5=126 minutes or 2 hours and 6 minutes.

Experts, any suggestion? Thanks in advance.

Hi LUANDATO,

We're told that to reach her destination, Jeanette must drive 90 miles and that she drives 5 miles every 7 minutes. We're asked how much time it will take her to reach her destination.

Your approach to this question absolutely works! When dealing with slightly more 'complex-looking' calculations, you might find it faster/easier to do the math in 'smaller chunks' instead of attempting it all at once.

For example, in this prompt the total distance is 90 miles, which we can 'split' into 3 groups of 30 miles each. With 30 miles, there will be 6 sets of '5 miles' --> 6(7 minutes) = 42 minutes of travel time for each 30 mile piece.

3 groups of 30 miles --> 3 groups of 42 minutes = 3(42) = 126 minutes

Final Answer: B

Jeanette's rate is 5/7 miles per minute.

Thus, it takes her 90/(5/7) = 630/5 = 126 minutes = 2 hours and 6 minutes to reach her destination.

Answer: B
