could someone explain the use of "for which"

i understand could is past tense of can but dont understand the grammar use of "for" and "which" thanks

During the recession of 1973, home mortgage foreclosures resulted in tens of thousands of Americans being evicted from homes that they can no longer afford monthly payments.
(A) that they can
(B) that they could
(C) on which they can
(D) because they can
(E) for which they could

IMO E
which is used to refer to the noun immediately preceeding it. in this case which correctly refers to homes.

Which seperated by commas is non critical to the sentence(in this case however, it is critical to the understanding of the sentence)

That is always used for critical uses in the sentence.

During the recession of 1973, home mortgage foreclosures resulted in tens of thousands of Americans being evicted from homes for which they could no longer afford monthly payments
Its better to burn out than to fade away

Eliminate C and D since past tense is not used. D can also be eliminated for pronoun reference.

Eliminate A and B because the pronoun reference they is ambigous (could refer to the tens of thousand Americans or homes)

The correct pronoun reference is which for the home and they for the tens of thousands of Americans.

for which would be a prepositional phrase.

for-> preposition
