Before George Eliot became the popular and respected novelist known as George Eliot, she had been an anonymous translator and essayist of formidably far-ranging scholarship.
A. Before George Eliot became the popular and respected novelist known as George Eliot, she had been
B. Before she had been the popular and respected novelist, George Eliot, she was
C. George Eliot has been the popular and respected novelist, George Eliot, after such time as she was
D. Before George Eliot became the popular and respected novelist, George Eliot, she was
E. George Eliot, before she was the popular and respected novelist, George Eliot, had been

OA A

My only questionis that because
"before" is already specified and we know the sequence of time do we still need to use "had been" can we not just use "was"
I think the source from which you've taken this question has incorrectly rephrased the original one.

Here's the original Sentence, which has "was" in option A.

Hello,

neither A nor E is correct. Rule: If you have "before" in the sentence, don't use past perfect. A would be correct if you change the past perfect "had been" to the simple past "was"
the correct version would be: Before George Eliot became the popular and respected novelist known as George Eliot, she was..

What is the source??

Well there is even a mistake in the explanation of the answer. It says:" George Eliot didn't become George Eliot, as (B)-(E) have it." But in answer choice E there is no become, though the older version of the question has become in it. Clearly Kaplan kind of messed something up. I would contact an expert from Kaplan.

George Eliot is a victorian writer, a humane freethinker, whose insightful psychological novels paved way to modern character portrayals - contemporary of Dostoevsky (1821-1881), who at the same time in Russia developed similar narrative techniques. Eliot's liaison with the married writer and editor George Henry Lewes arise among the rigid Victorians much indignation, which calmed down with the progress of her literary fame. In college and university many literature students were written term papers on george eliot. The last week i have planned to buy term papers online about the subject. Most of them are submitted their dissertation on time and got high grade.
