Use of perfect and simple past

by sanjib » Wed May 27, 2009 11:58 am
Chicago, where industrial growth in the nineteenth century was more rapid than any other American city, was plagued by labor troubles like the Pullman Strikes of 1894.
(A) where industrial growth in the nineteenth century was more rapid than any other American city
(B) which had industrial growth in the nineteenth century more rapid than that of other American cities
(C) which had growth industrially more rapid than any other American city in the nineteenth century
(D) whose industrial growth in the nineteenth century was more rapid than any other American city
(E) whose industrial growth in the nineteenth century was more rapid than that of any other American city

Pls focus some view on B. It mentions two actions happened previously.

Sanjib,

I think that this question is not about tenses but rather checks how correctly you compare things.

Look at it again... The sentence incorrectly compares 'industrial growth ' with "any other city", so we need to find the answer where there is a correct comparison... i.e. growth in Chicago is compared to growth in another city... that is IMO in E[/u]

Attack this question in 2 ways

1)As ket explained, compare apples to apples.

2) Chicago is a state, so we can't use anything except "where".

what's OA ?

gmatjem,

I dont agree with you about your 2. statement. IMO there is nothing wrong to use "whose" with state, although you might argue it's inanimate. it's OK to use whose because “whose” is the possessive form of both “who” and “which” - i.e. of both inanimate and animate antecedent.

Therefore my only strategy with this sentence is comparing things correctly.

There is nothing wrong in using the relative pronoun whose for a place.
I disagree about there being a restriction only to use where.
Any relative pronoun can be used, provided it is backed up correctly by the rest of the sentence (i.e parallelism, comparison etc.)

With that said,
A. fails on comparison. If where is used then it should be followed by, ...was more rapid than in any other Am. city
B. fails on comparison. Chicago compared to Am. cities
C. industrial growth not equal to growth industrially. Also in the 19th century seems only restricted to the other Am. city
D. fails on comparison. Industrial growth being compared to any other Am. city
E. Comparisons correct, with usage of whose and that. Also Chicago is correctly being compared to any other Am. city

IMO Ans: E

Correct answer is E.

Its a comparison question .. industrial growth in Chicago is compared with the industrial growth in other cities of America ... [E] exactly does that while others compare growth with cities.
