Can some one explain what is wrong with option 5.

Many issues in 5:
1) OFTEN shifts its position from EMPLOYS to CLASH. There is a difference between 'Language often employs common words' and "Words often clash with usage"

2) hot summers, harsh winters, extreme climatic variation ARE ITEMS of a list and therefore use of AND in between hot summers and harsh winters is wrong
