Recent technological improvements in electronic mail (E-mail) will resolve existing corporate communication problems. Vast quantities of information about products, services, and market transactions as well as most basic business communications, can be electronically exchanged, quickly and at a relatively low cost.
Explain how logically persuasive you find this argument. In discussing your viewpoint, analyze the argument's line of reasoning and its user of evidence. Also explain what, if anything, would make the argument more valid and convincing or help to better evaluate its conclusion.
The argument states that advent of e-mail will resolve the existing corporate communication problems. Stated in this manner the argument fails to specify many key factors which could have been used to validate it. The argument relies on many assumptions that have no supporting evidence. Hence the argument is unconvincing and flawed.
Firstly, it is common knowledge that any technological improvement will take time for adoption. So there is no guarantee that this recent development is going to resolve the issue any time soon. Moreover the key to successful communication is to ensure the message reaches the right set of people with accuracy. Here we need to understand that not all communication can be conveyed in a typed on written form. There are situations were in person communication will be more effective and necessary. In these scenarios this new technology will not be of an advantage. Clearly the author fails to consider this while making his argument.
In addition, the author mentions the point of quicker communication. E-mail is a means of communication that does not present itself to a person rather needs to be opened by the person and read. While e-mail definitely appears to be a very forceful means of communication it has the above mentioned flaw. Therefore there is a chance that some of the messages could be missed and the information that has to reach a person on time does not. Infact there have been several instances where delay in communication has caused distress, monetary or otherwise. This is a serious issue that needs to be considered while adopting this means of communication.
Finally, the author seems to suggest that this is low cost method. Indeed the email being a means of communication that does not use paper gives the impression that it does not incur much cost. However there is an enormous amount of investment required to setup the infrastructure which is necessary to support this means of communication. Admittedly the author has neglected this clause altogether. The argument could have been strengthened by providing some statistical data to support this point.
It is clear from the above mentioned reasons that the argument has several serious flaws. If the author had provided evidence to support the above assumptions he could have made the argument more robust. To validate any argument one requires the knowledge of several key information. In this case, it is clear that without the supporting information the argument is flawed and unconvincing.
