Prospective Student Profile Review

by heyteach » Thu Jul 12, 2012 9:46 pm
Hi! I'm currently in the process of deciding which b-schools I should apply to given my admissions data and career aspiration. Thanks for the time and input!

GMAT: Not yet taken but scheduled for mid September. Scored 650 (40Q 38V) on July 11 MGMAT CA practice test.
Undergrad: B.B.A. Finance and BMIS mid to upper tier private univ.
G.P.A.: 3.73
-President of largest student cultural club.
-Student supervisor in admissions department.
-Athlete tutor.
Postgrad Education: Post baccalaureate in secondary mathematics from a regional private university
G.P.A.: 3.88
Ethnicity/Nationality: Asian/US
Age: 24
Work Experience:
-Investment intern at a multi-billion dollar endowment.
-Teach for America- high school math.
*Teacher content leader
*SAT prep program director
*Teacher mentor
-ESL teacher in South Korea

Pursuing MBA to gain skills necessary to manage endowments and scholarship funds, or to develop the skills necessary to found ventures that solve problems that are prevalent in low income education.

I would appreciate any advice on my chances of gaining admission to top tier schools and specifically need help narrowing down my list of schools that I will apply to.

I would recommend familiarizing yourself with rankings to begin to winnow your list. MBAPrepAdvantage has a resource to start you with the process: https://www.mbaprepadvantage.com/blog/mb ... -rankings/. The tool points you to a ranking of best programs for nonprofit https://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandr ... t-rankings. Your goals are also consistent with social entrepreneurship.

With your present score you could target Duke and Ross but with a higher score you would be more competitive for some of the more selective schools on this list.

I hope this helps you as you begin the process.

Michael,

I just took my GMAT last weekend and scored a 700 (49Q 37V).

I've reevaluated my target schools and was wondering if you could help me to understand my ballpark chances of acceptance to the following schools (I've targeted schools that have been reputed as top class in finance education):

HBS
Penn Wharton
Chicago
NYU Stern
CAL Haas
UCLA Anderson
Tuck

Safety:
Ross and USC?

With your great grades, very good GMAT plus Teach for America you are in pretty good shape I feel.

From your list, I'd say that HBS, Wharton, Chicago and tuck, are all challenges for you (but still possible)
NYU and Anderson should be competitive for you,
and your safety schools, are, well safety schools... :)

so pretty good auto-evaluation here.

Congrats on getting a substantially higher score.

I would be slightly more optimistic in Jon agreeing on HBS and Wharton as challenges/reaches (albeit doable) and your safety schools but putting Chicago and Tuck as closer to target schools given your raised GMAT score, high GPA, background.

Also, if you are not accepted due to your younger age/experience you can always reapply the following year when you gain more experience.

Honestly dude, it looks pretty good. Everything is in order. You are in a good industry. Seem to have strong work experience and the whole lot.

all of which makes you competitive.

The question is dude, what is gonna make your profile SOAR???? I mean there are plenty of competitive folks out there, but where are you different? Where are you unique? That is what will get you in.
