The top business schools rightly look for significant business experience (3-5 years or more) before accepting MBA candidates. This is not arbitrary. In graduate business school, a significant portion of the learning comes form the interchange between classmates with experience and expertise in varied fields. A classmate who lacks experience detracts from the learning of everyone else in the room. In addition, schools have seen that those with prior experience not only contribute more, but benefit more from their education. Relating classroom discussions to your own background enhances your learning tremendously.

Finally, schools are looking for people with leadership potential and ability and that is very difficult to assess based only on undergraduate work and internships. They find that they are better able to pick a strong class by looking at the achievements demonstrated in the early years of a career.

In summary, an experienced candidate both contributes to and gains from a graduate education to a greater degree than an inexperienced one. You will best serve both yourself and your eventual school by pursuing your chosen field and building a foundation on which to base your education.

That said, there are always exceptions, but those are generally people who have shown significant business achievements while still in school. Alternatively, there are many fine, but lower-ranked schools that accept a larger portion of their class straight out of undergraduate programs.

Good luck

Because schools are looking for leadership, management and financial responsibility, part-time jobs seldom qualify. You will be competing against people who have managed departments for major employers such as Microsoft. Those people have developed managerial skills that you can't get part time. Also, schools are looking for people who are dedicated to having substantial business careers. To demonstrate that you are serious about business you need to work hard and successfully at a job before going to school.
