by akash1229 » Sun Jan 25, 2009 4:37 am
Hi , this is akash from mumbai, india. I gave my GMAT for the 1st time on january 14th and got a score of 640. TOEFL is to be given on 14th feb.. ahh yh valentines day lol! my work ex is of abt 18 months.. should be 24 mnths by the time i reach the uni. I also will be completing my master of commerce degree by april.. so umm.. if i apply for this 2009-fall sem , which could be the universities i should look out for?? would i get into top-50 universities in USA??
btw my break up is 37 Quant and 41 verbal (92%)
i was surprised at my quant score (probably i was edgy during the test) since i have been very good in math esp in school(83/100) and 12th (89/100)

I have worked as an Equity Advisor for HNI and Business Associates for a reputed financial services company

I wish to do an MBA to get into investment banking mostly into private equity

I have certificates in capital market , derivatives etc and computer programming also.

I have always been getting a score of around 60-65/100 in all my exams while pursuing my under-grad bachelor degree while in my 12th got a 76.5% and 83/100 in 10th

Im also looking for a job ..something like an assistantship and a tution waiver or something of that sort is it possible?

im pretty nervous about this .. pls help!

Dear Akash,

With your current profile, I think you might have a chance with schools in the US that are outside the top 40. There are many great programs that are not the "usual suspects" in the rankings. Based on your career goals, you might consider concentrating your school list geographically to the east coast and the Chicago area. However, I think the likelihood of financial assistance in terms of scholarships or assistantships is pretty low. You might be able to secure an on-campus job once you are there, but you should not count on that happening in terms of financing your education. I would encourage you to perhaps wait to apply this fall for entry in 2010 and retake your GMAT. If you can increase your score at least 30 points, you will be much more competitive for US schools in top 50.

Good luck,
Lisa

hmm.. i dont think i could postpone it to 2010. I will have to work for two more years in financial services then and the scene in brokerage firms here in india is very bad, disorganized. I really wish to be educated these two years and pass out of college by 2011 since hopefully by then things would be different.

amongst many other colleges im considering texas A&M, UIC, uni of wisonsin, university of georgia (terry), penn state (smeal) and uni of michigan... i think they suit my deadlines , budget and probably score. do you think i have a possibility of making it to them?

btw i can put in 2 yr post -12th work -experience... would that count??

1 yr in equity markets
1yr in diamond assortment.

hey lisa could u please reply asap.. im looking forward to the feb-march deadlines so any assistance on ur part would really be helpful. i just wanted to know where i stand with respect to the above universities and if there is any specific university that i could target within the top-50? btw one more question... at the time of deadline do we only need to submit our application or even have the documents couriered to the college by that date? say if i fill the application by 14 feb for a 15 feb deadline can i upload my transcripts.essay, recccomendation online after scanning them and send the hard copy by courier later?

Dear Akash,

Some schools might be willing to take scanned copies by the deadline but hold your decision until the official hard copies arrive. But there could be schools that will not, so you need to clarify with each school on whether or not you can send the hard copies after the deadline.

Once again, I think it will be tough with your current profile for US schools in the top 50. You might have a chance at a few on your target list, but any school with a GMAT average above a 640 will be a big hurdle. Nevertheless, if you feel you have a chance at a school, you should apply. If you can submit strong essays and recommendations, making a compelling case for your admission, then it is always possible.

Best of luck,
Lisa
