A length of rope is cut into three different lengths. What is the length of the shortest rope?

(1) The combined length of the longest two pieces is 6 feet.

(2) The combined length of the shortest two pieces is 3 feet.

Assuming the lengths of three pieces are x, y and z such that x > y > z.

Let's take each statement one by one.

(1) The combined length of the longest two pieces is 6 feet.

x + y = 6. Insufficient.

(2) The combined length of the shortest two pieces is 3 feet.

y + z = 3. Insufficient.

(1) and (2) together

We can't get the unique value of z with the help of x + y = 6 and y + z = 3. Insufficient.

The correct answer: E
