Of the 1400 college teachers surveyed, 42 percent said that they considered engaging in Research an essential goal. How many of the college teachers surveyed were women?
1) In the survey, 36 percent of the men and 50 percent of the women said that they considered engaging in Research an essential goal.
2) In the survey, 288 men said that they considered engaging in Research an essential goal.

Hi,

Question stem says 588 college teachers (1400 * 0.42) considered engaging in Res an essential goal.

Statement 1:

Let w be the number of women teachers.

0.5 (w) + 0.36 (1400-w) = 588.

w can be figured out. Let us not spend time finding w ... Hence, suff

Statement 2:

We realize that 300 women and 288 men were pro-research.

But, do we know the number of women teachers surveyed ? No.
do we know the number of women who were NOT pro-research ? No.

Hence, insuff.

Is it A ??

Made x the number of women. Yup, the answer is A.

0.5x + 0.36(1400-x) = 588 linear equation of 1 variable.
