Sorry for so many quesion...but have my GMAT in 2 days :(

21. Marta bought several pencils. If each pencil was either a 23 cent pencil or a 21 cent pencil, how many 23 cent pencils did she buy?
1. Marta bought a total of 6 pencils
2. The total value of the pencils bought was 130 cents

The problem seemed simple and i chose C as the correct answer. However, the correct answer is B.

My exam is on 20th Nov.This is going to my second attempt.Would like to tell you something from my experience.DO NOT GET TENSED ESPECIALLY TWO DAYS BEFORE THE EXAM because when you write the GMAT, a calm mind would do wonders. So just relax!!

Now lets discuss the problem,

From the problem we know that 23(x)+21(y)=TOTAL AMOUNT

(1) gives no information about the total amount.INSUFFICIENT.

(2) says that 23(x)+21(y)=130.This can only be possible if x=2 and y=4 so SUFFICIENT.

Answer is B

P.S:- Do share your experience after you write the test, will be very helpful.

Hi guys best of luck for ur exams, just a quick question-

moneyman
how did u come to the answer? Did u just use different sets of numbers till you got to 130 cents? I looked at the question and had the feeling that there is a catch, so started plugging in different numbers. But this takes a long time. Would really help if u shared ur method

Thanks

You are right ri2007, I did plug in numbers to see if it satisfies the condition. This would take really long in complicated problems but in this one it was pretty simple so I just plugged in numbers to solve the problem.
