Value of b?

by crackgmat007 » Wed May 13, 2009 9:16 pm
In the xy-plane, the line with equation ax + by + c = 0, where abc ≠ 0, has slope 2/3. What is the value of b?
(1) a = 4
(2) c = −6

Pls explain the logic to arrive at the solution. Answer seems to be A. Tx

First rephrase and put the equation in the slope intercept form:

ax+by+c=0
=> by=-ax-c
=> y= (-a/b)x+(-c/b)

Given slope = 2/3 = (-a/b)

We can find b if we know a

Statement 1:
a = 4. Sufficient

Statement 2:
c=-6. Insufficient

Hence A
