Is x+y equal to 3.6?

(1) x > 1.7 or x = 1.7
(2) y > 1.9

The OA is the option C.

Why is C the correct answer? I think that it should be E. May someone clarifies this question to me? Thanks in advance.

Hello M7MBA.

We have to say if x+y is equal to 3.6 or not.

(1) x > 1.7 or x = 1.7

This statement doesn't tell us anything about y. INSUFFICIENT.

(2) y > 1.9

This statement doesn't tell us anything about x. INSUFFICIENT.

(1) x > 1.7 or x = 1.7 + (2) y > 1.9

Let's pick the least value of "x", that is to say, x=1.7.

Now, since y > 1.9 then $$x+y>1.7+1.9=3.6\ .$$ This tell us that x+y is not equal to 3.6. INSUFFICIENT.

Therefore, the correct answer is the option C

I hope it helps.
