Stmt II

|x| > x

Means x is neagtive. No way to tell info on if |x| < 1 or > 1

Stmt I

x/ |x| < x

Multiply by |x| on both sides. This is ok since |x| is always positive we can do this without worrying about the inequality reversing.

x < x |x|

x - x|x| <0

x(1-|x|) <0

Either x< 0 1 -|x|>0 i.e 1>|x|

or

x>0 1-|x|<0 i.e 1<|x|

Eg: x=3 x/|x| < x

x = -1/2 -1/2 /|-1/2| < -1/2 since -1 < -1/2

Together:

Only possible scenario

x< 0 1 -|x|>0 i.e 1>|x|

|x| is less than 1
