Profile opinion- just starting to look

by JoeyM1987 » Thu Jul 05, 2012 3:46 pm
Hello,

I'm in the beginning stages of considering my MBA. I would really appreciate an opinion on how I can best present myself (knowing I need a high GMAT score) to the top tier schools which is really what i'm considering.

My career goal right now is to land a job at a large asset management firm. I've been a Fixed Income Associate/Analyst for the past 3 years in the research department at an independent broker/dealer. I'm Currently a Level 2 CFA candidate and waiting for my results from the June exam.

My undergrad is my Achilles heal, I went to Westfield State and came out with a 2.7.

I would love to hear from anyone who has been in, or dealt with people in my situation. Any pointers on what I could do outside of the obvious high GMAT score to give myself a fighting chance at a top tier school?

Thank you!

Joey

Actually even better than a super high GMAT is work success: What we try to do is find within you a profile that will display you as a "shooting star" getting promoted higher faster and younger than others at your level, getting awards, bonuses, raises; taking on additional responsibilities; and getting early leadership. These things altogether are the things that will likely most impact your application (as well as of course the WAY in which you present these things)

Jon thanks for your insight that is very helpful. One more question, i've read a little bit about building an alternative transcript as a way to improve my standing from undergrad. Do you think that's something worthwhile or would a strong presentation from my work success and solid GMAT numbers do the trick? Thanks again,

Joe

I've read about that too. But, I think your time is limited, and that there are other more useful things you can do with it (like making sure you ace that GMAT, like making sure you kick butt at work). If you can do it in ADDITION to the above two, sure, why not?

(PS if you don't yet do community service, start NOW)

I think Jon has given you some sound advice. I would add that with a 2.7 from a lesser know school, you will be in a very tough spot at a top tier school. One attractive alternative is to consider a part time MBA. I have helped many clients enroll at schools like NYU, UCLA, Haas..and these are top programs while they keep working. Ten years from now, many will not even notice/care that you were a part time student at a great institution, and of course the admissions requirements are easier than the top tier grind.

Just another path for you to consider now or at some point down the road.

Jon & Alex thanks for the advice it is much appreciated. I think what it comes down to is that I'm obviously not ready for 2013 applications which is fine, I'm only 25. I'm going to look into alternate transcript building to bump my grades up, try and finish off the CFA next spring, and get going on some self-initiated community service rather than just what we do through my firm. Maybe I'll stumble into something really compelling and interesting along the way to make my story stronger!

By the way this is a great service you all provide keep it up.

Great to hear!
So you got plenty of time to do things right!
Since you already know what you want, if I can suggest a bit of a path for you: First, try and get that GMAT our of the way. Spend the next three months studying for your first exam, and see how you do. Once you have the score, then you can start thinking about where you might be interested in applying. and once you know THAT you will have almost a whole year to go visit schools before you actually apply next year.

Not too shabby,
