GPA 3.2 and GMAT 740 - chance at HBS?

GMAT :740 Q50(92)V40(89)
Education:Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology
GPA:3.2

WE: 3 years at Unilever, promoted, strong engineering profile, substantial achievements at work, including international experience

Do I have a good chance at top schools? say HBS/Stanford/Wharton?

Maybe! The 3.2 won't knock you out of the game. Unilever is an awesome company. Do you have good leadership, and are you moving up fast? What are your goals? And what about extra stuff? (like ECs, Volunteerism, Entrepreneurship)??? Got any of that?

Hey! Thanks Jon!
I have a very strong community work background - have taught/set up libraries in villages since i was 15 years old..and did a lot of work during my college days as well taking extra credits in rural development
ECs are also quite strong..technology captain, governor of literary societies, editor of college magazines
Leadership-wise the experience in my opinion falls short in number of years..the depth of experience has been really good though..not sure how it all fits in!

Hi

The profile is a candidate for top 20 schools.I think the chances are resting on the essays, especially a strong message which positions you well.

In my opinion, stretch your college list to 8 based on further likings and goals. Try EC's to turn heads. Show maturity through EC,Leadership.

See what you can pull out of your background for leadership. My gut tells me you have far more than you imagine. Get the right stories and tell them in the best way possible, and you should do well.

Thanks guys for the encouragement!
I also wanted to know if I should consider giving the GMAT again. I was fairly confident of a 770 but had a real bad day. I am sure if I take another date in December first week I can crack 760 minimum. But will it hurt if the Admissions Committee know that I have taken GMAT twice. I am not really sure how to weigh up the options here.
Should I take the risk or just concentrate on putting together a good application now? Please advise.

Your profile looks good & Unilever is a great name to have on your CV but H/W/S are just tremendously competitive. Do you have a chance? Sure, depending on how the rest of your application looks. However, please understand that the applicant pool for these schools is full of superstars & you must have a diversified list of schools (where you are applying).

GMAT: Yes, a 770 is better than a 740 & no, another shot will not hurt your chances. However, if I was in your shoes, I would concentrate on my application right now. I had a 780, and I think that while it does give an additional star, the priority for you should be a consistent/clear/strong application at this point. However confident you might be about the GMAT, preparing for it will take time & concentration.

Yes, you do, especially having graduated from an IIT.

I think the 740 GMAT and IIT pedigree are sufficient, even in the competitive Indian applicant pool. But I also agree with applying to the tier below HBS/Stanford/Wharton given just how competitive that pool is.

So, start researching MIT Sloan/Kellogg/Chicago Booth/Columbia/Tuck and see which programs align with your career goals and other criteria.

Forget about the GMAT man. It's a waste of time. You have your 740. If you got an 800 at this point it wouldn't help you that much more. What you need to concentrate now is your stories, applications, on doing well at work, getting great recommendations.

What good will the 760 bring to you post 740. You will already be rated as a high score. God forbid, if it goes down then you will be unnecessarily upset.

I guess I would start preparing for the essays and recommendations. Giving GMAT again might be tricky and a drain, something you would not want in a stressful period as this.
