Kinda losing and gaining confidence !!

by rc_sunil » Sun Jul 25, 2010 12:15 am
Hi folks,

This is my first post here, I have been a reader mostly. Hearing to some awesome stories of how people are cracking it and techniques they followed.
I am on the prep journey now, probably the nth time I hopped on to this wagon, but this time i have a date to look for and that is making me hit it harder !

However, I feel so confused on where my concentration should lie my week points are definitely verbal but I am not getting anywhere near what the tricks of the trade are. I suppose I should concentrate more on practice questions more and more - or rather repeat them if needed.

Any help will be great.

In Math, I have made a quite a few shortcuts of my own. Specially the simple calculations you can do on your mind which will get you an answer even before you can write the question inputs on your rough work sheet !
Especially the fractions, %ages and ratios - its really handy to keep some standard values in your mind pre calculated, i saw that it gave me a huge boost in terms of pacing my test plus giving you confidence.

All that sores down for me as soon as i hit verbal ...!! Fingers crossed !!

Lets see, I will persevere to excel there as well

Hi Sunil,

How long you have been preparing and what all resources you have exhausted till now ? Also, When is your G-DAY ?

Above questions are very important for experts(not me) to recommend you any strategy. So please mention that.

SC Strategy :
Pick MGMAT SC guide, read through all the topics. Once you have digested all the concepts pick up OG11 and start going through questions in a critique manner. For every question, analyse why a particular option could be right or wrong. Remember elimination is very important in SC. You have to get the split right (2-3). Once you start getting the split right then you are in 50-50 zone. If you get a right answer finally then go back and refer OG11 explanation. Does that match with what you thought for that option to be right ? With repeated practice, you will be able to align your thought process same as OGs. Then pick OG12 and repeat the same thing. You will definitely see an improvement. Stick around here and post your queries and answer others as well.

Never ever leave a question just because you got that right at first attempt. Always, go back and look for OG explanation for every option in that question. To 70-80% of new questions, you should be able to relate to some question in OG.

Hi Suman

Thanks dude !
I can say I have been in and out for past couple of years. I almost exhausted OG-11 and Kaplan Prem 2009 but then got side tracked, like may of my friends suggested I shoud have targetted a date back then.
So at a stretch I did 2-3 months prep. This time, I am set for end of Sep-2010 and I feel so good about it atleast to have confirmed the date :)
Now coming to my prep, I am doing OG-12 and few online tests like MGMAT (free online test) - planning to start on the MGMAT book (the overall concepts with test bank).

Startegies - SC - yes I do try elimination as the last option when I dont get the gist of it. Primarily I followed approach from OG and Kaplan 2009 to break the basics down - active/passive, idioms and few tips (like if the whole sentence is underlined, then option D/E is generally the ones). I also read the Verbal fundamental book (supplement for for OG12).
CR - I jump into my own conclusion pretty fast - I think that is my main problem.
RC - I just am not a good reader, I cant concentrate when the topic is off beat or something I am weary of. These things should not be affecting my thinking when I answer the RC but its just that I need to practice that better.

I got to 45 on Q but on the V i am still below 30 :(
