7 days and running-suggestions?

by drhomler » Sat Jun 23, 2007 4:49 pm
This morning I took my second gmatprep and got a 680(47Q,37V) somewhat negating my first gmatprep score which scared the life out of me after 7weeks of study and solid mgmat prep scores. My biggest weakness remains SC, the dreaded beast.

Ive noticed two things in my preptests first I am better in some areas of quant than others so depending on what is asked my score can be schewed. Which is scary its as if I am banking on a little luck. Second it is a mistake, a huge mistake to get lazy going into the back nine(I dont play golf but the reference seemed appropriate). I wasnt very satisified with my quant performance, which turned out ot be one of my best and I think I got sloppy during the verbal. Laziness is such a mistake especially on the SC, it is imperative to keep shredding those sentences until there is no doubt that you have picked th eright answer. And lesson learned dont assume a score no matter what, last week I got a 42 raw score in the quant and I felt real strong going into the verbal, and I chunked them both.

I just completed the OG SC section and Ive kept a log of all the ones of missed on a spreadsheet. Ive read mgmat sc twice plan on reading at least one more time. The thing I dont get is I am shooting 66% from the field on the gmatprep and on the OG questions Ive missed less than 20% in fact questions 75-138 I have a better hit rate than on the first 75, thats right the guy that sucks at grammar is better on the harder ones. I have definitely put in the time but I need to get over the hump if I can reduce the my sc misses to my OG level than I have a 40V raw score or higher and potentially a 700 if the grmelins in the CAT see fit to ask some extra q's in quant that im good at.

And yes I know, my posts are long winded and vaguely obnoxious(perhaps peppered with some incite), but I have been off the grid in my social life for the past 7 weeks studing for this thing and this is how I release stress.

So what do I do for the last 7 days? Ive taken 6 mgmat tests, 2 gmatprep and 2 powerprep. I dont want to take any more mgmat's because they will be recycled and I think there SC is too easy. If I had more time Id let them kick my ass in quant but I dont. Should I delete the logs and take 2 more gmatprep and keep reworking the ones I missed in the OG?

Clearly I would love to nail this thing next week and move on to my apps. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you in advance

I wouldn't read too much into your latest practice test score--this is just one data point and it's normal to have some variance.

The good news is that you're on the homestretch and you have put in some solid study over the last few weeks. You just need to trust your prep and go into the test with confidence.

One strategy I'd think about doing in your final week is writing down the concepts that cause you trouble onto flashcards and reviewing these flashcards several times a day. Do some practice problems from each section (not too many) to keep yourself fresh, and think about taking another GMATPrep test 2-3 days prior to your real test.

You've got what you need to achieve your goal on the GMAT. Just believe in yourself and go in with a killer attitude.

Best of luck!

I would go with what Eric said. You are on the last stages of this marathon and you are doing very well. At this point, you do not want to worry too much about what 'might' go wrong. Do not get taken down by a single data point and trust your prep.

For this last innings stretch, since you feel that SC is your Achilles heel, I would suggest plowing through those OG questions and again (and if you feel you know the answers since you have seen them before, you can try Princeton Review). Take down some more notes to pinpoint where your conceptual weakness lies and keep reviewing these notes.

And above everything else, have faith that you have put in solid work. Keep up the spirits! Good luck!

Thanks for the well wishes and advice guys... I needed it. 4 day s left, I guess I could always take it again too so no need to get too stressed.

Ive been pounding SC, I just did an mgmat 750+ SC homework bank and I got 27/30(I still think they are a little easier) but I will try to do another 100-200 OG before the test and keep track of my weaknesses
