Window & openings

The figure above represents a window, with the
shaded regions representing the openings for the
glass. If all line segments in the figure are either
horizontal or vertical and the openings are all the
same size, what are the dimensions, in inches, of each
opening? ( 1 foot = 12 inches)

(A) 12.0 by 18.0
(B) 10.5 by 16.5
(C) 9.0 by 15.0
(D) 8.0 by 10.0
(E) 7.5 by 13.5

It's possible I'm over simplifying this.. don't feel 100% confident as this seems to simple.

The first thing i noticed is that we don't know if the width between the right most piece of glass and the end of the window is also 3 inches. So we can't assume it is.


So let's consider the height of the whole thing. 3ft = 36inches

We know that there are 3+3+3 inches in free space, so that leaves 27inches of glass. 27/2 = 13.5 inches of glass in each pane.

Look at the answers, and there's only one with 13.5 inches as a possibility. So E.

Also, where did this question come from?

That's correct.

36-9/2 & 24-9/2

Answer is E. I was looking at the missing 3rd piece. The answer is E.

This came from a paper test. I assumed 3 because the the same arrow is used for the last one. Looks like here was a typo or possibly wanted to test what the correct answer possibly is (even though the Q does not say so)

Looks like it was a bad question... You should be able to assume that the unmarked distance is 3. Also, if we weren't meant to assume it, the question should have asked something like "which one of the following is a possible dimension of the window".
