Profile Evaluation

by ramya.s » Thu May 30, 2013 12:48 pm
Hi Team,

I am a 23 year old Female, Indian. I graduated in 2011 from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Engineering (Honors) in Mechanical Engineering with a GPA of 3.8/5 (Second Class). I spent a summer of my undergraduate programme at the Technical University of Berlin. I have been active in various activities while at university- represented the university at the Hong Kong model United Nations; as a trained classical dancer have led dance groups and organised performances at the university; worked 3 summer internships with major corporations in the automotive, rig-building and design industries. The summer after graduation worked at a NGO in their child labor alleviation programme. Have been working since graduation as a design engineer at one of the largest oilfield services company in the world (in Singapore); have been sent to Dallas currently for a year long training programme. I plan to apply for the 2015 class and have not yet taken my GMAT. I would like to know if my profile with a good GMAT score would be good enough for the top schools like Harvard, Sloan and INSEAD?

Looking forward to a response.

Best Regards
Ramya

Hi Ramya,

Would suggest you to wait for another 12 months and build your profile in terms of leadership and professional achievements. As you are aiming top 10 b-schools therefore I would suggest you to target 710+ GMAT and submit good essays by showcasing professionalism, maturity and ability to work with others.

Let me if you have further queries.

Regards
Erina

I think your NGO experience will be attractive to MBA admissions committees. Within your role as an engineer focus on building leadership experiences beyond your job duties over the next year. Also seek out community service programs within your company's social responsibility program or within Dallas.

Coming from the competitive Indian applicant group you need a strong GMAT score to further differentiate yourself. HBS likes applicants with engineering backgrounds so with a great GMAT score it is worth an application. Likewise the other schools you are competitive for but I would also recommend adding less competitive schools to diversify your MBA admissions chances.

Good luck,
