Number of incorrect questions can you afford go wrong

Hi BeatTheGmat Members,
I understand that no one knows the GMAT's Scoring alogirithm accurately, and the test itself is Adaptive.

If you have taken the GMAT Prep tests and if you have scored 700 or above, could you post your split scores and the number of mistakes you made in that section.

I am trying to get a rough estimate of the number of questions I can make an educated guess and move on with the test.

I tried to look up my scores but apparently there is a problem with my GMATPrep program now. However, I remember clearly my scores for the math section and how many questions I missed because I was a bit surprised when I first took the test.

On the first test I missed 11 questions and got a 48
On the second test I missed 11 questions and I got a 49

However, one of my students missed 13 questions and got a 37.

It think this helps show that it matters which questions you get right. Most of the questions that I got wrong were in the second half of the test whereas my student missed more questions at the beginning. If you get to the difficult questions and stay around the difficult level your score will be much better than if you are at an easy level and get the same number of questions correct.

Hi!

I'm also super curious about this topic. I just took my first of the MBA.com's practice exams after a few weeks of in-depth math review to start off my self-study (CliffsNotes Math Review for Standardized Tests and OG Quant). In the very beginning of my study, I figured out quickly that my verbal was strong and my math was weak.

When I took the practice CAT, I thought the Quant was insane and finished it totally demoralized. I started running out of time and had to answer the last 10 questions based on quick, educated guesses.

My scores:

Q 48
V 47
760

Quant - missed 15 questions: #8, 14, 15, 18, 23, 24, 25, 27, 29, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 37
Verbal - missed 2 questions: #2, 18

I have a hard time believing these scores with the discrepancy in number of questions wrong. I'm curious to hear other folks' scores with their breakdown of incorrect questions.

I freaked myself out and missed 7 out of the first 9 quant questions, so that explains how I can miss 5 LESS than you DCJen and still get a lower score!!

Most conservative estimate of GMAT score based on accuracy of GMAT prep

Verbal( As it is )
#mistakes score
0-1 = 51
2-4 = 50-45
5-7 = 40-44
8-13= 39-35

Quant(Conservative)
#mistakes score
0-1 = 51
2-4 = 50
5-7 = 49
8-13= 48-45

Conditions:-
1. Never get more than 2 consecutive wrongs.Concecutive wrongs will get your score more lower than mentioned above.
2. First 3 questions on each section are correct.
3. Verbal score is completely skewed especially at 40+.At 40+ range every single question counts and can make or break your score at big level.Suppose 2 persons both got 50 in quants, but one got 770 and other guy got say 720 (overall score),then mere difference between them is 3 or 4 verbal questions correct.
4. If you get first few questions wrong it is very difficult to cross 770+ even if you get all remaining questions correct. However you can cross 740+ even with first few questions( 1 or 2) wrong with ease . Result is insignificant whether you made mistake first or last when compared to number of mistakes provided they are not concecutive.
5. You attempted all questions.


These are my few cents. Experts has to add.
